PLOVDIV is one of the oldest cities in Europe with a history of inhabitation going back over 8000 years. There is a good collection of Bulgarian revival buildings in use as museums, hotels, and restaurants etc. and is worth a visit if you have a chance.

During your city break in the second largest Bulgarian city you can visit the old town, which consists of one of the most spectacular ensembles of town houses from the period of the Bulgarian National Revival. Also, you can visit the Saints Constantine and Helena Church, Roman Amphitheater, Regional Ethnographic Museum, a mosque from the Ottoman Empire...

Bachkovo Monastery: is the second largest Bulgarian monastery after the Rila monastery. Situated 24 km south of Plovdiv. Found in 11th century, this is one of the oldest monasteries on the Balkan peninsula. The wall paintings are priceless, but the most interesting thing here is the miracle making icon of the Holy Virgin, work of Georgian painter from 1311.
Asenova krepost (The fortress of Asen) is a medieval fortress, 3 km south of the town of Asenovgrad, 20 km from Plovdiv, located on a high rocky ridge. The earliest archaeological findings in the fortress are form Thracian settlements, the area of the fortress being also inhabited during the Ancient Roman and Early Byzantine period. The fortress gained importance in the Middle Ages. It was considerably renconstructed in the XIIIth century during the rule of Bulgarian tsar Ivan Asen II to serve as a border fortification against Latin raids. The best preserved and most notable feature of Asenova krepost is the Holy Theotokos of Petrich Church.
